A VoIP Phone System Offers A Break From The Traditional Phone System

By Mary Ann O. Elliott

If a VoIP phone system is a strange concept to you, then you are about to be amazed. VoIP is an acronym for voice over Internet protocol and the name implies exactly what the system does. Standard phone lines function through an analog signal. The Internet is used to send digital signals that have been converted from an analog version over the Internet.

There are lots of places that these types of phone systems have been implemented; however, the concept is still relatively new. Because of this technology, we are positive to see a significant change in the way we make and receive phone calls in the very near future. A VoIP phone system often works through some type of software but there are actually three different ways in which it can be implemented.

An ATA is the first way that this system can be applied. An ATA is an analog telephone adapter. A regular phone can be plugged into one of these adapters and the ATA will change analog signals into digital ones that can be sent via the Internet. The second way to implement this type of phone system is by using an IP phone, or an Internet protocol phone. The only way that IP phones are different from standard phones is in how they are connected to a line. Usually, phones come with a standard cord that you would plug into a phone jack but IP phones plug directly into an Ethernet port on your router. A comparable type of IP phone functions using Wi-Fi instead of being plugged directly into a router.

The final way to implement a VoIP phone system is by transmitting it directly through your computer. Making phone calls through this method gives you an incredibly easy and cheap method of communicating. Rather than connecting a phone to your computer, you simply use your computer as the phone. All you need is the proper software and equipment. You will find that free programs are available that will allow you to make computer-to-computer phone calls; however, calling to another traditional phone generally requires payment.

There are many companies that provide VoIP phone calling plans both for commercial and residential use. Once everyone has changed over to a VoIP phone system, the traditional system will be non-existent. Phone service benefits can be received by every company that opts to employ this kind of phone system. This is because the IP system eliminates the need for buying expensive hardware and can save money by combining a voice plan with a data plan.
