In most cases, people develop it through accidents or misalignments of jawbones and muscles. In severe cases, the pain could be so intense such that the person can hardly perform basic things like chewing, laughing or talking. Others engage in physical therapies to assist in healing their conditions. This in most cases involves opening and closing the mouth as they massage the jaw. In other cases, the person could also use electrical stimulation that enhances the movements. Consequently, the individual would be able to strengthen his or her jaws hence relieve pain.

Since this condition is also caused by mental conditions such as stress, the person also needs to manage their stress levels. This can be achieved by maintaining a positive mindset, guidance and counseling or simply exercising. Yoga is one form stress reliever that exercises the body and mind.

Medications are some of the widely used forms of treatment, mostly anti-inflammatory drugs. These include ibuprofen and naproxen. Additionally, steroids could also be taken to reduce muscle and tissue inflammations. Occlusal therapy also assists the individual reduce biting their teeth especially at night. Its main function is to balance bites.

The other TMJ cure people use is surgery. This is the last option proposed by many doctors after all possible treatments fail. It is expensive, and may cause varied adverse effects depending on the individual immune system. I other cases, doctors may suggest its use when there the jaw muscles and tendons have been injured. Ligament tightening and reconstructions of the jaw are common surgery types.
