What Qualifications do you need for a Computing Career?

By Andre Bart

There are many jobs available in the computing sector for those just entering the industry. However, before you start applying, check the sort of qualifications which are being asked for - do you need to know a programming language? Do you need a degree or other professional certificate? Once you're fully qualified, you can get started on your IT career.

Once you've got your head around the fact that you'll be learning for the rest of your career, you will probably have to prove what you already know. Even the best home-taught computer technicians may have to prove they have the knowledge they profess to have by getting a professional qualification. Some companies that offer software (Red Hat, Sun, Microsoft, Oracle and many others) offer paid official exams. Since they do not teach you and just test your existing knowledge, this is frequently very cheap in comparison to paid courses.

A start-up job which will get you to grips with computer hardware is computer cleaning - this may not be the most desirable of jobs, but many computers need very regular cleaning as they are housed in dirty or dusty environments. For those who want to work with hardware as opposed to software, this is a good place to start. Another good place to start is working as tech support in a school, the work here will be really varied and you will have a good deal of hardware maintenance to do from unjamming printers to wiring in new computers, helping teachers to use interactive whiteboards and maintaining the LAN.

Many entry level computer careers start in database creation and management. For these, programmes such as MySQL and Access need to be mastered. If however, it is the more physical side of the computing industry that interests you, it would be useful to have a computer engineering qualification or similar. For less detailed work such as computer cleaning and installation, a fairly basic knowledge of how hardware functions and is put together is all that is required - as well as knowledge of how to handle the components safely.

If you're really struggling to get even that first job it is definitely worth signing up with a temping or staffing agency. The nature of these jobs is that the position is likely to be temporary and will not come with the usual employee benefits, but it is a great way to see what kinds of jobs are available in your area and to get some initial exposure.
