Treatment of Asthma: Effective Ways to Get the Life You Always Wanted

By King Franco

Living a normal life is important especially for those with asthma which is why proper asthma treatment is necessary. To prevent asthma from getting worse, the patient must get to know what triggers it and stay away from those triggers. Another way is to take medications to help lessen the presence of symptoms. There are preventive and management methods for asthma and associated with this are long-term and short-term medications. However, the medications must go with the patient's age, symptoms, and known triggers. Asthma may progress in another way for different people so the type and amount of medications may vary as well.

Generally, the long-term control medications lower inflammation that results to symptoms while the quick-relief medications are required for short-term symptom relief, in case of asthma attack. An example of long-term treatment medication is the inhaled corticosteroids like fluticasone and budesonide. These medications have low risk of side effects. Leukotriene modifiers include montelucast and zileuton which have been linked to psychological reactions like aggression and suicidal thinking. Long-acting beta agonist that include salmeterol and formoterol are another asthma treatment medication that is associated with severe asthma attacks and are only taken together with inhaled corticosteroid. Theophylline keeps the airways open and relaxes muscles along the airways. Combination inhalers like fluticasone and salmeterol is another example of long-term medication used in asthma treatment that may be associated with the risk of side effects.

Short-term beta agonists belong to the quick-relief medication group which are known to take effect right away but last for many hours. Oral and intravenous corticosteroids also fall in this category which lessens inflammation caused by severe asthma episodes. Atrovent is another quick-relief asthma treatment that relaxes the muscles around the airways during an attack.

Allergens can cause asthma and allergy shots are used as asthma treatment in this situation. Immunotherapy injections act on the patient's immune system by lowering its level of reaction. Omalizumab is given to people with allergies and chronic asthma since it alters the patient's immune system. Other allergy medications that are effective for asthma treatment include oral and nasal spray antihistamines and decongestants, corticosteroids, ipratropium and cromolyn nasal sprays.

Self-care is also an essential part in asthma treatment. This may include trying hard to avoid asthma triggers, keeping asthma diary, developing asthma action plan, using natural asthma therapies to boost relaxation and checking your peak flow on daily basis. The asthma diary assists the sufferer to keep track of their asthma progress monitoring symptoms and treatment and the triggers of the asthma.

As much as asthma is not cured, the person suffering this condition can lead a normal life if they monitor the progress of their disease. Children with asthma attacks are recommended to be reared in sterile environment and very clean environments to prevent them from inhaling contaminated air. Treatment of asthma should be monitored on daily basis.
